banana nutella swirl muffins

This muffin y'all. It's like...everything. I don't even like bananas generally but these are super subtle and you know what I like alottttt? NUTELLA! I mean. It's nutella. I try not to make too many muffins/cupcakes because I love them so much and I don't want you guys to get sick of them. BUT I'm currently visiting my family and my sister wanted to make something for her awesome neighbors since they are always bringing her baked goods. My go-to is obviously muffins because they are good for mornings and as snacks throughout the day. I added banana for some natural sweetness and nutella for sheer fun. Voila! This muffin was born!

Here is the aftermath (brace yourselves)...

These were a mega hit - with both family and neighbors. In fact, we had to hide some away because the ones that we had set aside for her next door neighbor was a victim of muffin-knapping. Their 4-count suddenly became a 3-count and no one could really tell me where they were at the time in question that the nabbing occurred. Which just tells me...I should have made more!

As with anything - presentation matters! For these beauties, I added a thin slice of banana on top of the batter and sprinkle them with brown sugar to caramelize on to...strictly for presentation so completely optional. It's just always nice to give a hint as to what flavor of muffin you are eating.

As you can tell, I like to fill the muffin tins almost to the top. I love when they bake a bit over the wrappers and create those perfect muffin really is the best part.

Don't they look amazinggggg? The banana sliver along with the great swirls of Nutella running through this muffin really looks absolutely delicious. Couldn't have asked for a better presentation in the end and the best part is that it's not fussy at all. Super simple to do and only adds to the yumminess of the overall muffin. If I was at home, I would have added the brown sugar to the banana slices after they were baked and then blow torched it (one of my favorite kitchen gadgets) to essentially brûlée the banana on top which would have added a bit of crunchy caramelized flavor. YUM.

Banana Nutella Swirl Muffins


2 ripe bananas, mashed well

6 Tbsp butter, melted

2 eggs, room temperature

3/4 cup sour cream (or greek yogurt)

2 tsp vanilla extract

3/4 cup sugar

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

2/3 cup Nutella

banana slices (cut on a bias), optional garnish

brown sugar, optional garnish


  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Line a 12 regular-sized muffin pan with wrappers.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the mashed bananas with the melted butter, stirring to combine.

  3. Mix in the eggs, sour cream (or yogurt), and vanilla. Add the sugar in and mix well.

  4. Add in the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Gently mix/fold the dry ingredients with the wet.

  5. Pour the batter evenly into the muffin cups.

  6. Melt the Nutella in the microwave for about 20 seconds and then drizzle Nutella over muffins

  7. Gently swirl the batter with a knife to form swirls of Nutella.

  8. Top each muffin tin with a slice of banana and sprinkle with brown sugar for a garnish (optional).

  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool for at least 10 to 15 minutes before eating.

As I said, the banana flavor is very subtle in these and they are super light tasting ... you don't feel like you have to take a nap afterwards at all. Instead you may feel like you need another one so just please pace yourselves.
